Originally from Peru, Paola Moreno-Roman earned her Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology from Stanford University before bringing her scientific training to community-centered science education and engagement. Her work focuses on making science more accessible, relevant, and responsive to the communities it serves. At Foldscope Instruments, where she previously worked, Paola led science education and outreach initiatives that introduced hands-on microscopy to classrooms and communities worldwide through a high-quality, low-cost paper microscope. She is also the founder of Yachaq Warmi – Mujeres en STEM, an initiative that supports Peruvian girls and women in STEM through mentorship, leadership development, and storytelling grounded in both Western scientific training and traditional and Indigenous knowledge systems. Paola also serves on the board of the Amazon Center for Environmental Education and Research, where she advises on science and education programming in the Peruvian Amazon. Throughout her career, Paola has built bridges between scientific institutions and the public through grassroots STEM education, dialogue with faith communities, and international engagement. As a Quechua Peruvian scientist and practicing Roman Catholic, she offers a perspective shaped by science, faith, and community, and is dedicated to fostering connection, curiosity, and the common good.
