Project focus: The Fellow will engage deeply with journalists, meteorologists, social media content creators, scientists, and organizations communicating with Hispanic/Latino communities, to help them drive public understanding about climate change.
Based in Puerto Rico, Mariela Santoz-Muñiz has worked in various journalism roles, often with a focus on Latine communities in the United States and Puerto Rico. Before joining Climate Central, she taught a journalism course to undergraduate students at the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico. Mariela also worked for six and a half years as the Collaborative Journalism database and newsletter coordinator at the Center for Cooperative Media at Montclair State University. As a freelance journalist, she has been chosen for several fellowships, and her work has been published by NBC News Latino, the Open Notebook, Prism, palabra and more. Mariela has a master’s degree from Boston University in international relations and international communications and a bachelor’s degree from Ana G. Méndez University, Gurabo Campus, in socio-humanistic studies. In addition, she is currently a master’s degree student in information science at the University of Puerto Rico, Rio Piedras Campus.
