Sammie Delcy holds a Ph.D. in pharmacology and a master’s degree in public health from the University of Pennsylvania. Her doctoral research zoomed in on the mechanisms that contribute to learning and memory deficits after traumatic brain injury (TBI) and zoomed out to examine preventive measures for TBI in underrepresented communities. Her interest in underrepresented communities expanded beyond the laboratory into her master’s work, which focused largely on population health and the neighborhood-level factors that drive maternal and adolescent mental health disparities. Throughout her training, Sammie has worked to bridge research and policy by advocating on Capitol Hill for injury prevention policy, writing on Black maternal health for the Philadelphia Inquirer, and creating programming to promote effective science communication. Sammie is dedicated to informing policies that serve communities at risk, grounded in the belief that meaningful science requires collaboration between researchers, government, and the people science serves.
