Michelle Madlansacay is a developmental scientist who applies mixed methodological and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding the role of effective communication in promoting social collaboration and learning. Her own interdisciplinary background in psychology, education, and global studies, together with her experience growing up as the daughter of immigrants from the Philippines, has shaped her belief in leveraging the knowledge and strengths of all people to address ongoing social issues, regardless of cultural or socioeconomic background. Michelle is particularly interested in learning about communication within relationships structured by power differentials, including parents and children, teachers and students, and governments and communities, in hopes of understanding how those in positions of authority can better create spaces for collaborative learning and problem solving. Her graduate work focused on the impacts of early parental and teacher responsiveness on children’s language learning outcomes. Michelle holds a B.S. from Carnegie Mellon University, an Ed.M. from Harvard University, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago.
